  1. Add To Cart conversions
  1. Begin Checkout conversions

Everything works with Shopify’s new checkout extensibility update.
Good luck.

Important: How To Switch Over Conversion Tracking
There are three possible scenarios you're in.
1. You have no existing conversion tracking setup
In this case you should follow the instructions to set up your tracking.
There's no need to remove old code / tags.
2. Your old setup is broken.
First you want to remove all the instances of tracking code + old tags from your website.
  • Check your theme.liquid file for references to "Google Tag", "Gtag" etc…
  • Delete any code like this.
  • Check Settings > Checkout > Additional Scripts for any conversion tracking scripts and remove these.
3. Your setup still works, but you want to change over because you want one that you're sure is accurate it (hint: this one.)
In this case…
Set up your new purchase conversion action as a secondary conversion for now.
Let this new conversion action collect data over 7-14 days.
Here you can make sure that the data is correct + the setup is working properly.
Once you’ve verified that your new setup is correct, switch the new purchase conversion action to primary and turn your old purchase conversion action to secondary or delete it.
Then, remove all the instances of old tracking code + old tags from your website.
  • Check your theme.liquid file for references to "Google Tag", "Gtag" etc…
  • Delete any code like this.
  • Check Settings > Checkout > Additional Scripts for any conversion tracking scripts and remove these.
Important: Advantages + Disadvantages of Each Setup

If I were you, I would choose to implement the setup with Google Tag Manager (GTM) as it is the more accurate one, and makes implementing consent mode V2.0 easier.
Do This First: GA4
With my experience, the best way to setup GA4 is using the Google & YouTube app.
I've tested a custom setup, and it works but there are always issues with 'sandboxed' URLs and incorrect item-level revenue reporting (this is a skill issue on my part, not GA4s).
You likely have the Google & YouTube app installed already.
But if not, search for "Google & YouTube" in the Shopify app store.
It looks like this.
Install it, and then follow the instructions to set things up.
On the overview page, you'll see a section that looks like this, click "Get started".
You may get prompted to setup conversion tracking, if so, then click "Set Up."
Then connect your Google Analytics property.
That's you done.
To test whether analytics is sending data, open up your Analytics dashboard.
Navigate to Reports > Realtime.
Then visit you site, and make sure that you're seeing new activity in your realtime report.
Now that you've setup GA4, you should setup either GTag or GTM conversion tracking for Google Ads.
Google Tag Manager (GTM) Setup

In my opinion this is the best setup to have.
Firstly, you can download a pre-made GTM container template with all the tags, variables and triggers already created. All you need to change is 4 variables and you'll have a full working setup.

Google Tag (GTag) Setup

If you advertise in Europe where consent mode V2.0 laws apply, then I would recommend setting up with Google Tag Manager, and not this setup. Scroll down to find the instructions for Google Tag Manager.

What To Do Next…
So you've setup conversion tracking, and I imagine you're excited to get your ads running.
And while I'm also excited for you, I have to warn you…
If you're new to paid advertising, you're probably not going to be able to run profitable ads.
  • Competition is at an all-time high as Shopify + Dropshipping courses are flooding the market with stores.
  • Trust is at an all-time low as people are used to getting scammed + waiting years for their products.
  • We're in a recession, people aren't spending their money as easily as they were 2 years ago.
  • The list goes on…
For this reason, it is imperative that you first educate yourself on Google Ads.
This will give you a much-needed advantage.
What I've been trying to do with my YouTube channel is provide as much free value as I can, so that you can start off profitably.
So I recommend you watch my videos.
In particular, if you're a small eCommerce brand starting out, then check out these.
  1. Google Shopping Campaigns Course. (You may have heard that search campaigns are what's best, that is wrong. CPCs are much higher on search, and a shopping ad does a much better job of pre-qualifying traffic due to the fact that they can see your price and what your product looks like which means that you often get more relevant clicks.)
  1. 67-Step Google Ads Audit. This will make sure that all your Google settings are setup right. It also covers campaign structure, bidding, attribution and other paid advertising fundamentals that you should wrap your head around.
These are by far my best videos, but they are long, so don't get pushed by the algorithm.
So leave a like and a comment if you find them useful, to help me out.
If the opportunity cost of learning + managing your own Google Ads campaigns is too great…
I.e. Your passion or needed skills are in product / operations.
